This piece is typical of Song lacquerware in its simple form and undecorated surface. Compare a similar tiered, dark brown lacquer box in the Victoria and Albert Museum, dated to the Song Dynasty and illustrated by Garner, Chinese Lacquer, 1979, p. 51, pl. 19, and also by Jenyns, Chinese Art II, p. 204, no. 147
