A GILT AND PAINTED POTTERY FIGURE OF A SOLDIER TANG DYNASTY
Standing on a rock-form base, the left fist hollowed to hold a spear, the right hand with fingers spread, wearing belted and strapped armor molded with lion's head epaulets, flowerhead breastplate and a formal lotus at the belly, all over a long flowing tunic with flared sleeves and knee pads painted with delicate scrolls, his well-modelled face with lively expression and with long curled moustache and beard painted black, all framed by the peaked brim of his close-fitting, knobbed helmet, retaining extensive traces of gilding and black, red, orange, green and blue pigments, some restoration - 31 in. (78.8 cm.) high
