AN INCISED UNDERGLAZE RED AND BLUE MEIPING XUANDE MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE, EARLY 18TH CENTURY
In early fifteenth century style, the stoutly potted body vigorously incised with two large sinuous dragons leaping wildly above a pair of smaller elongated dragons striding above the flared foot, all with underglaze blue eyes and reserved in white on a ground of breaking waves painted in underglaze red of crushed strawberry tone speckled in apple green, restoration at luting line--13 5/8in. (34.5cm.) high

Compare the very similar vase in the Baur Collection, illustrated by John Ayers in the Catalogue, vol. IV, A526, where he notes that the form and design of this vase is based on an unmarked early fifteenth century type exemplified in a large blue and white meiping illustrated by John A. Pope, Chinese Porcelains from the Ardebil Shrine, pl. 50. He also cites a similar vase bearing the same mark in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Compare, also, the vase sold at Christie's, London, November 1, 1971, lot 13. A pair of smaller vases of this type with Yongzheng marks in the Tokyo National Museum is included in the exhibition catalogue, Far Eastern Ceramics, October-November, 1970, no. 129 and in Sekai toji zenshu, (revised edition), Vol. 15, pl. 40
