Lot Essay

After a long and successful career in Belgium, Baugniet settled in Paris after 1860. It was here that he found the inspiration for many of his finest paintings. Modern Paris provided an endless range of subjects for a new generation of artists such as Baugniet, who painted their surroundings. The new railroad network easily transported vacationing Parisians to resort towns on the coast and in our picture, one may surmise that Baugniet witnessed four elegant ladies dressed in the height of fashion at the seashore.
