Lot Essay

Verelst adapted this present impressive composition on a number of occasions; see, for instance, the picture with P. de Boer, Amsterdam, 1935, no. 125, in which the grapes on the ledge are omitted; that offered at Sotheby's, London, Dec. 10, 1980, lot 80 in which a poppy is added at the top of the arrangement, with a tulip replacing the pinks on the left side, and with peaches on an extended ledge with low relief sculpture; and another sold at Christie's, London, April 15, 1983, lot 31 with a watch on a ribbon replacing the fruit on the ledge, which the artist repeated again in a painting sold at Sotheby's, New York, Jan. 30, 1997, lot 14 ($120,000).
