Lot Essay
The present work, with numerous differences, can be related to one of a pair of signed and indistinctly dated paintings offered at Christie's, London, June 28, 1974, lot 116. In that work, set before a classical gateway, the central figures of the three children around the hobbyhorse remain the same, but the horse is held by a young girl raising a whip and another child pulls on the leading reins of the platform, while three other children and a dog play in the foreground.
