An able watercolorist as well as a master in oils, van Dael used various supports for his paintings. Though few works on white marble are known today, the artist exhibited at the Salons of 1796 and 1819 'Differents fruits peint sur marbre blanc' (no. 475) and 'Fruits peints sur marbre blanc' (no. 1122), respectively. A Still Life with Peaches and Grapes is in the Musée d'Orleans; Still Life with a Pineapple, Peaches and Grapes, signed and dated 1819, was sold at Hôtel Drouot, June 28, 1994, lot 54 (FF750,000 = $136,607); and a Bunch of Grapes suspended from a Brass Ring, signed and dated 1806, of almost identical size to the present works, was in the collection of the Dukes of Leuchtenberg, Munich, for which a line engraving exists (Witt microfische, FARL).
