NEW YORK, CIRCA 1844, MAKER'S MARK OF WILLIAM FORBES

On domed spreading foot applied with a band of stylized foliage under a chased border of foliage and rocaille, the lower part of the body chased with vertical leaves and applied with two foliate handles, chased front and back with foliate scroll and rocaille cartouches enclosing, on one side, a coat-of-arms against martial trophies and a ribbon inscribed NATIONAL GUARD, and on the other side with a presentation inscription, with everted stiff foliate rim, the domed cover with similar decoration and cast eagle-form finial, marked on base -- 13½ in. (34.3 cm.) high

The inscription reads Presented by the 2nd Compy. N>G> 27th Regt. N>Y>S>A> to Captn. John Cummings as a Tribute of Respect as an Officer and a Token of Sincere Regard as a Friend N.Y. Feb 1844.
