The circular bodies each raised on four massive paw feet headed by acanthus and terminating in octagonal pads, the lower part of the bodies chased with flutes below an applied mid-rim and gadrooned rims with anthemion at intervals, each with two reeded foliate handles terminating in lion masks, with removable waisted collars with gadrooned, anthemion and acanthus rims and cylindrical liners, engraved front and back with an Earl's armorials, crest and coronet, fully marked -- 10 in. (25.4 cm.) high

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Alexander impaling those of Yorke, for Dupre, 2nd Earl of Caledon, born in 1777. He married in 1811 Catherine, daughter of Philip, 3rd Earl of Hardwicke. He was Governor of the Cape of Good Hope from 1806 until 1811, where a district nad town are named after him. He was Lord Lieutenant of Co. Tyrone from 1831 until his death in 1839.
