The arms are those of Howard impaling those of Trevor for Henry, 12th Earl of Suffolk and 5th Earl of Berkshire, born in 1739. He married in 1764 Maria, only daughter of Robert Trevor. He was Lord Privy Seal in 1771 and Secretary of State for the North from 1771 until 1779. In 1757 Mrs. Delany had written of him as "a pretty young man, lively and natural" but on his death in 1779 Horace Walpole could offer no charitable remarks but could offer no charitable remarks but could only record that "(Lord Suffolk's) death is no blow but to his family. Seldom was he able to do any business; and had no talents when he could" (Letters, Toynbee ed., vol. X, p. 387).
