The inscription on each reads "Presented to the Reverend Wm. S. Phimer D.D. by the Ladies of the 1st Presbyterian Church Richmond Jany 1847."

In 1845, William Mitchell sold his business to his brother, Samuel P. Mitchell and John H. Tyler, who formed the firm Mitchell & Tyler.
