A GEORGE III PAINTED TÔLE TEA TRAY
LATE 18TH CENTURY

The oval tray with pierced handles decorated with a cartouche depicting "The battle of La Hogue" after Benjamin West, edged with ribbon-and-rosette border - 26¼in. (66.5cm.) wide

There are two versions of this painting, one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the second in the Naitonal Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. The first version was engraved in 1781. (H. von Erffa and A. Staley, The Paintings of Benjamin West, 1986, nos. 90, 91).
