A REGENCY ROSEWOOD AND PARCEL-GILT SIDE CABINET
FIRST QUARTER 19TH CENTURY
In the Southill taste, the shaped rounded top above two frieze drawers and a pair of cabinet doors lined with pleated silk flanked by faceted tapering pilasters and another pair of similar doors on faceted tapering feet - 33½in. (85cm.) high, 60in. (153cm.) wide, 17¼in. (44cm.) deep
PROVENANCE
Christie's London, 25 June 1987, lot 58
The distinctive tapering column angles and faceted octagonal feet are found on a pair of chiffoniers at Southill Park, Bedfordshire, probably supplied by William Marsh. They are en suite with a commode with the same feet, which was probably designed by Henry Holland, who remodelled the house for Samuel Whitbread I (d. 1796) and completed the interiors for his son Samuel Whitbread II (F. Collard, Regency Furniture, 1985, pp. 40, 42 and 44-45).
Two pairs of straight-sided dwarf cabinets with similar angles and feet have been sold at Christie's London, 25 February 1971, lot 111 and 20 November 1986, lot 130.
