Lot Essay

According to Dr. Ila Weiss, this work is possibly Mt. Merino, A Study, sold in 1864 to W.J. Cochrane. While related to three catalogued paintings of Mount Merino, the marshy treatment of the foreground of the painting is very similar to that of Mt. Merino and the Catskills at Twilight of 1867 (on loan to Vassar College), a modified verson of which foreground appears in South Bay on the Hudson, near Hudson, N.Y. of 1864 (Hunter Museum of Art, Chattanooga, Tennessee). Among the drawings for the Hunter Museum painting is the original sketch for this painting. (Sketchbook, 1864, on microfilm 688 as no. 11 at the Archives of American Art). A letter from Ila Weiss
will accompany the lot.
