Lot Essay

Charles Baum was a school teacher from the Rhineland who came to the United States about 1854 and settled in Egg Harbor, New Jersey. He had a studio in Philadelphia between 1867 and 1869, and his subjects were primarily still lifes of fruit and dead game. According to Dr. William Gerdts, his fruit subjects in particular are very Roesen-like and the two artists have often been confused.
