The serpentine crest with shaped ears above a pierced interlaced splat flanked by tapering stiles over serpentine arms with scrolled grips above shaped supports over a trapezoidal slip-seat, on square molded legs with quarter molding with pierced brackets joined by an H-stretcher--38in. high

The splat design and scrolled arms on this armchair are related to a group of chairs with a history of ownership in North Carolina. These related chairs are illustrated and discussed in John Bivins, Wilmington Furniture, 1720-1860 (Wilmington, 1989), pp. 36-42, fig. 13.
