2 volumes in one, folio, 317 x 208mm, 16th-century panelled calf over bevelled wooden boards, roll-tooled border, title stamped on front cover, small central panel-stamp on front cover, rebacked preserving part of original backstrip, 2 brass fore-edge catches without clasps, very occasional spotting, light dampstain at upper edge.

SECOND EDITION OF VOL. I AND FIRST EDITION OF VOL. II. Title of vol.I within woodcut allegorical border, title of vol.II within architectural border, 4- and 5-part borders to several pages, woodcut arms of Strassburg in vol.I, ornamental and historiated initials, head- and tailpieces, 135 woodcuts of plants by Hans Weiditz, allegorical woodcut on S3r, printer's device at end of vol. II.

After publication of the first volume of Herbarum vivae icones in 1530, Brunfels continued working on it, and published the second volume in 1532. It contains a further 47 new woodcuts by Weiditz, plus two which had appeared in vol. I. The appendix to volume II contains works by other authors, including Brunfels's contemporaries Bock and Fuchs; their contributions here are their first botanical publications.
