FIRST EDITION, WITH THE COMPLETE SUPPLEMENT. Limited to 250 copies (Monograph and ? Supplement, parts I-VII) and 40 copies (Supplement parts VIII and IX, each of a total edition of 1000 and 500 copies respectively) with handcolored plates. Monograph: Lithographed title and 48 hand-colored lithographed plates by Walter H. Fitch; one photographic plate, one page of geographical distribution maps; Supplement, parts I-VII: lithographic title after Fitch and 30 hand-colored lithographic plates by Lilian Snelling, one double-page, the pictorial printed wrappers after Fitch; Supplement, parts VIII and IX: 10 hand-colored plates (5 lithographic and 5 collotype) by Margaret Stones.
A FINE COPY of this classic folio monograph on lilies. Elwes became interested in lilies on a visit to the Himalayas and managed to record most of the species available in regions explored for flowers by Europeans up to that time. Prophetically, in 1880, he wrote that the Corean peninsula might contain undiscovered species and that area, as well as western China, proved most abundant. One of Frederick DuCane Godman's daughters, Alice M. Godman, took on the task of producing the Supplement with A.D. Cotton as author. WWII brought publication to a halt in February 1940 with part VII, Turrill's parts VIII and IX appeared in 1960 and 1962, with the consent of Alice and Eva Godman, under the sponsorship of the Royal Horticultural Society. Lilian Snelling's drawings were sold at Christie's London, 21 June 1967. The Monograph in this set is signed by Henry John Elwes on a free endpage, dated 16 May 1915.
