FUCHS, LEONHARD. New Kraüterbüch. Basel: Michael Isingrin, 1543
Folio, 377 x 246mm, contemporary pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, blindtooled with rolls of leafy intertwining ropework, heads-in-medallion, and biblical scenes, 2 fore-edge clasps without catches, slightly rubbed, some light dampstaining, mostly marginal, occasional small stains or spotting, part of 3 letters on title lifted off onto previous blank page, one leaf torn without loss.
Woodcut printer's device on title, larger Isingrin device on final recto, full-page woodcut portrait of Fuchs on title verso, 517 botanical woodcuts by Viet Rudolph Speckle after Heinrich Füllmaurer and Albert Meyer, woodcut portraits of the three artists at end, woodcut historiated initials in several sizes, touches of color to one woodcut.
FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN, with amendments and an additional 5 woodcuts. Aware that Fuch's original Latin text (see previous lot) would appeal primarily to a relatively narrow band of Latinate scholars, Isingrin had it translated into German in order to widen considerably its market. He also appended an additional index of illnesses which could be treated with herbs, thereby further ensuring its popular appeal. The woodcuts are those used in the 1542 edition, plus an additional five, depicting Hunerbis, Spitziger Wegerich, klein Schlangen kraut, Knabenkrautweible, das mittel, and Kuchens chell.
