Folio, 305 x 190mm, 18th-century sheep, single gilt fillet around edges, central gilt lozenge, restored, with leather at head and foot of spine and at extremities renewed, without blank bb4 and Z8, lightly browned, some spotting and staining, a few short marginal tears neatly repaired.
Printer's device on title, 509 woodcut botanical illustrations COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, woodcut historiated initials from several sets, including one large criblé initial.
FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH, VIVIDLY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Gazeau obtained from Isingrin the original woodblocks used to illustrate the octavo Basel edition of 1543 from Fuchs's publisher, Isingrin. Their appearance in this first translation into French of the De historia stirpium make it, in the opinion of Nissen (p.46), the best illustrated edition published in France, as well as the most complete.
