2 vols., large folio, 472 x 352 mm., contemporary Viennese half diced russia over thick pasteboards, marbled paper sides, spines in five compartments with four broad raised bands, gilt- and blind-tooled to a gothic design and gilt lettered, with the gilt monogram of Charles Louis, archduke of Austria and duke of Teschen (1771-1847) in top compartments, sprinkled edges, both upper joints expertly repaired, lower corners with trifling wear; plate 239 with small area of discoloration, a few plates with faint text offset, some slight foxing to text.
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 249 hand-colored lithographed plates by "Herr Corrector Reindl unde sein Sohn Mathias" after drawings by Ignaz Strenzl, 2 letterpress title leaves, 3 leaves dedication and foreword, 216 numbered leaves of letterpress accompanying the plates, including Latin and German indices at end occupying nine pages.
A FINE COPY of a notable botanical rarity. "Wagner was an apothecary in Pressberg, and owned a drug and chemical factory in Pest, which latter is probably the 'verlag' in the imprint. Doubtless he arranged the production in Vienna to take advantage of its (then) unrivalled facilities. Strenzl was an artist who did a good deal of work for Trattinick; but these bold and skilful plates are his best work" (John Collins, in Plesch sale cat. Part 3, lot 799 note). Indeed, it may be added that Strenzl's artistic achievement for Wagner brings to an appropriate and glorious conclusion the succession of great Viennese botanical artist initiated by N.J. Jacquin. Possibly due to its rarity, the book is not mentioned by Blunt, Dunthorne, or in Great Flower Books, and is unrecorded in the catalogues of the Lindley Library, Linnean Society, Royal Horticultural Society and Massachusetts Horticultural Society. Copies are recorded at British Museum (Natural History), Kew Gardens, Berlin (Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz), New York (Herbarium of the New York Botanical Garden), Cleveland (Holden Arboretum) and a few copies have been noticed at auction over the past thirty years.
