Apuleius Her Barbaru" above the panel and "1523" below, these small repeated tools and the lettering originally stamped in black, pair of metal and parchment clasps and metal catches, some worming to boards, upper corners worm-eaten, front free endpaper renewed, small patch to lower margin of title, dampstaining to upper margins slightly affecting text, some worming in latter half, mostly to last 25 leaves. Second edition of Ermolao Barbaro's corrections to Pliny, a reprint by an unidentified Venetian press of Eucharius Silber's edition Rome edition of 1492. Barbaro (1454-1493) was one of the most learned of the classical scholars of his time, and his Castigationes, based on a thorough examination of Pliny's greek sources, was one of the greatest philological achievements of the fifteenth century. In it he made over 5000 corrections to the received text of the Historia naturalis, nearly all of which were subsequently accepted as the definitive text. Provenance: Kenneth K.
