This clock is recorded in the Tiffany pattern books of 1883 as a "Traveling Clock". The case is a typical example of silver in the Japanese taste produced by Tiffany during the 1870s and early 1880s. Like other hollow ware made in this style, the case was given a hammered surface embellished with floral decorations and pearling. This was expensive to produce and it is not surprising that the movement is unusually fine.
See C. Allix, Carriage Clocks, plate V/21 for an illustration of an identical platform. The escapement employs a fork roller action designed by A.-L. Breguet. In the form found on this clock it was employed by Albert Potter. For an illustration see G. Daniels, The Art of Breguet, p. 306, figure 386.
