5 parts in 1 vol., folio, 293 x 187 mm., modern speckled calf antique, spine gilt with black morocco gilt-lettered label, boards slightly bowed, general title with corner torn away, affecting part of border, mostly marginal worming to many leaves (particularly at the front and back of the volume), these patched with translucent tissue (now slightly yellowed), some wormtracks catching text or woodcuts, gatherings ** (preliminary index), LL and lll (register) misbound by binder, k3 slightly defective at fore-margin (affecting several lines of text), scattered soiling and spotting, but despite its flaws, a complete, unsophisticated copy of this extremely rare Dutch herbal. THE WOODCUTS PARTIALLY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, mostly in Book 1, but some touches of color applied to a few woodcuts in later sections.
FIRST EDITION, printed in gothic type, nine-line and smaller woodcut and metalcut initial capitals, general title with woodcut border incorporating a vignette view of the "Hesperidum horti" (cavorting nudes, etc., the block signed "PB"), five sectional titles employing two different xylographic headings ("Des Cruydeboecks" and a cartouche), *3v with woodcut portrait of Dodoens holding a flower, woodcut device at end of sections 2, 3 and 4, 715 woodcuts in the text, many by Arnaud Nicolai after Pieter van der Borcht, others derived from the series of woodcuts used in the octavo editions of Fuchs.
