FUCHS, LEONHARD. De Historia Stirpium commentarii Insignes. Lyons: Balthazar Arnoullet, 1549. 8vo, 158 x 102mm, 17th-century calf, gilt double fillet on covers, gilt spine, gilt edges, front cover detached, split in rear hinge, title inscription erased with resulting small hole, tears in title, bv5-6 repaired, a few letters on aa2r lifted off. Second Lyons edition, the first with this series of woodcuts. Arnoullet's sea-horse device (Baudrier 3) on title, woodcut author portrait and 510 woodcuts of plants by Clément Boussy, all with CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING, woodcut initials from several sets. A fine, colored copy of the first illustrated Lyons edition, and the FIRST USE OF THIS IMPORTANT WOODCUT SERIES commissioned from Clément Boussy by Arnoullet in 1547. It is a miniature version of the woodcuts in the Basel editions published by Isingrin. The series continued to be used by Arnoullet in his 1550 French (see lot ???) and 1551 Latin editions of this same work, the 1549 and 1551 editions of Fuchs's Plantarum effigies (see lot ???), and 1550 and 1552 editions of Dioscorides.
Provenance: Petrus Poluche (?), two inscriptions erased, one at end dated 1607 -- Ad. Stordeur of Bruges, bookplate dated 1910 -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie; Horticultural Society of New York, bookplate and blindstamp.
