PROVENANCE
The Estate of Richard W. Weatherhead, sold in the Rooms, 23 April 1988, lot 186

Cf. a pair of similar side chairs, sale Christie's London, 30 June 1932, lot 48, and the set of four more elaborate armchairs, sold Christie's New York, 17 October 1987, lot 143 and 144.

Chairs in the Chinese manner appear among the well-known engravings of Chambers', Manwaring's and Ince & Mayhews' designs, as well as among the pen and ink drawings of John Linnell. The inspiration for the design of the chair would appear to derive from Thomas Chippendale, The Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd ed. (1762), pl. XXVII where nine such designs were published (see also the 1754, 1755 and 1762 editions).
