A lawyer and a statesman, Elihu Root (1845-1937) was a close friend and adviser to Theodore Roosevelt. Secretary of war under two Presidents and secretary of state under Theodore Roosevelt, Root received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1912 for his many contributuions to world peace.
