Lot Essay

First modelled in 1755 by Falconet at the instance of Madame de Pompadour, this figure is otherwise known as Madame de Pompadour en déesse de l'amitié. Other examples are in the Musée de Sèvres and the Wadsworth Athenaeum, J.P. Morgan collection. See Préaud and Fäy-Hallé, Vincennes, fig. 451, where the present example is mentioned.

It does not appear that any connection has hitherto been established this figure and Boucher. However, before 1767, Louis Marin Bonnet published an engraving after Boucher entitled Offrante sincere which corresponds very closely to the present composition, see Pierrette Jean-Richard, op. cit., no. 317.
