Lot Essay

This pair of vases is similar to the pair formerly in the Sainsbury collection, sold Sotheby's London, June 23, 1964, lot 138 and to the famous vase with ormolu mounts and a bouquet of Vincennes flowers sent by the Dauphine of France to her mother in 1749. It may well be that this model is one of the pot-pourri fleurs de relief of which five sizes were listed in the stock list of October 1752. The present lot must undoubtably be of the largest size.
