Lot Essay

A cup of similar size in the collection of Her Majesty The Queen has a similar ground pattern. Sir Geoffrey de Bellaigue Sèvres Porcelain from the Royal Collection, 1979 no. 119 discusses this decoration and cites other examples. A pot à tabac illustrated by Marcel Brunet and Tamara Préaud Sèvres, Fribourg, 1978, pl.XXXVI painted by Vielliard has a similar tankard painted with a blue flower; and the present lot may therefore be ascribed to the same hand. Other similar baskets of eggs and fruit appear on an écuelle also by Vieilliard sold by Christie's Monaco, December 7, 1987, lot 232. Another cup of this ground pattern was sold in the same sale, lot 199 and subsequently sold in the Dr. Henry A. Chase collection, sale, Sotheby's New York, May 20, 1989, lot 83.
