Lot Essay

The present lot is of the largest size in which this model was produced and would appear to correspond to the vase sold on December 18th, 1760 for cash for the sum of 432 livres. This very high price can only be explained by the oppulent gilding and fine quality of the panel painting. For a discussion of this model see Rosalind Savill, The Wallace Collection Catalogue, pp. 69 - 91.

The mark of this unidentified painter also appears on pieces of the Maria Theresa and the Bedford services.
