Lot Essay

From 1921 until 1938 Matisse lived at 1 place Charles-Félix, an eighteenth century building in Nice from whose windows he could see not only all of Nice but to Cannes and Cap d'Antibes. Although he was mostly preoccupied with painting interiors he ventured out to record the unique perspectives the shimmering light of the Cote d'Azur.
