Lot Essay

Powers modeled the present representation of his infant daughter Loulie's hand in 1839. His studio assistants then carved it in marble and presented it to the artist as a gift. The model, typical of sentimental Victorian taste, proved very popular. According to Richard Wunder, Powers' records show twenty examples of the present model as having been commissioned. Of these, ten were shipped to the United States.
