A previously unknown work, this painging brings the number to ten of known versions that Melchers painted of his Falmouth, Virginia, neighbor Julia Payne and her son. Painted circa 1921, compositionally, this painting relates closely to Mother and Child which is in the collection of Belmont, The Gari Melchers Memorial Gallery and The Caress belonging to the Lang Art Gallery, Scripps College, Claremont, California. Melchers also painted five nursing poses of Mrs. Payne and Ivan which are in the collections of the Muskegon Museum of Art, Muskegon, Michigan; Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana; Belmont, The Gari Melchers Memorial Gallery, Falmouth, Virginia; and the National Museum of American Art,
Washington, D. C.
