"One of Thomas Edison's many inventions was the motion picture machine which he envisioned as an instrument "that should do for the eye what the phonograph did for the ear." In 1896 the Edison vitascope was unveiled to the public at New York's Koster & Bial's Music, marking the birth in America of a new form of art.
