A circa 1920s photograph of David Wark "D.W." Griffith, considered one of the most influential figures in the history of American film,
creator of Birth Of A Nation. After writing scripts for Biograph in the early 1900s, he directed Mack Sennet's first film as an actor, Balked At The Altar. In 1909 he directed one hundred and forty-four films, including Mary Pickford's earliest; founder of the Triangle Company in 1915, he went on to found United Artists in 1919 with Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.
