N. Davey, in Netsuke, the M. T. Hindson Collection , p. 78, dates Tomokoto to about 1800 and describes him as a rare member of the Okatomo school. Meinertzhagen in The Art of the Netsuke Carver, 1956, p. 37, lists Tomokoto as one of the four carvers who followed Okatomo, i.e. Okatori, Okakoto and Okanobu. Only four netsuke signed Tomokoto are listed in the Meinertzhagen card index, Archives of the British Museum, 1986, edited by George Lazarnick. The boar appears to be the fifth.
