Lot Essay

Hair curls are a prominent characteristic of the traditional shishi. Here the carver's style is so close to that of Toyomasa that the work can be mistaken for his. Neil Davey in his Netsuke, page 243, cites Meinertzhagen for listing Sadanobu as a little known member of the Toyomasa school.
