Lot Essay

Although the lotus bud, the flower of Buddha, is beautiful and a universal symbol of Buddhism, it is rarely carved as an independent netsuke in place rather than as an accompanying or embellishing decoration. The curved stem of the bud provides a natural place for the himotoshi.
