Lot Essay

Renowned as a teacher, Jarvis (1837-1895) was also a celebrated pianist in his own right as well as a patron of the arts. He played with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Society. He also founded and financed a series of chamber music and piano recitals in Philadelphia which continued for over thirty years.
