CARNES CITY LETTER EXPRESS ADHESIVE
USED BY WILLIAM E. LOOMIS CITY AND PACKAGE EXPRESS
(W.E. Loomis) Carnes' City Letter Express, San Francisco, (5c) Rose (35LI), large margins, tied by small blue grid of dots, matching San Francisco Letter Express handstamp with illustration of horse and rider on cover with printed Eagle, Flag & Shield patriotic design on ornately cut backflap, July 4, 1868 inscription, addressed to Society of California Pioneers
This stamp was originally printed and used by George A. Carnes, a former post office clerk who started a local delivery service and acquired the San Francisco Letter Express in 1865. He and his partner sold out to William E. Loomis in 1867, and Loomis altered the printing plate by removing Carnes' name (probably very late in 1868, as the October 30, 1868 cover illustrated in Letters of Gold suggests). Loomis evidently continued to use the supply of old stamps and the "horse and rider" handstamp found on this cover.
EXTREMELY FINE. A REMARKABLE AND EXTREMELY RARE SAN FRANCISCO LOCAL POST USAGE. Illustrated in Nathan (p.38). Ex Caspary, Haas.........
