Details
Château Mouton-Rothschild--Vintage 1924
Pauillac, 1er cru classé.
Low-shoulder level, deep color, and excellent Carlu label
The 1924 vintage was an abundant one in which many fine wines were
produced. Certainly Mouton was no exception to this. Nevertheless, the importance of this bottle stems less from its contents than its
label, which is one of the most highly sought among collectors. In one of the earliest decisions as the new administrator of Mouton, Philippe de Rothschild commissioned a label design from Jean Carlu, a well known poster designer.
Taking inspiration from the Art-Deco movement, the final design reflected the creative energy of contemporary Paris, with highly styl- ized rendition of the familiar Mouton ram's head, a chai, and five arrows representing the Rothschild brothers who originated from Frank- furt during Napoleon's reign.
The use of this label raised the eyebrows of many in conservative Bor- deaux, and led to the introduction of the now famous artist label series in 1945.
