One decorated with mermaids astride dolphins and one with mermen leading seahorses; each with a central standard above four spiralling bifurcated branches, spot-hammered and applied with seaweed and seashells, above a squared baluster standard applied with figures, seahorses, fish, seashells, and seaweed, above a shaped spot-hammered base applied with shells and seaweed and with four shaped feet, each marked--15½in. high

Lot Essay

The design of these candelabra is described in the Tiffany Archives as "Candelabra, Seahorse, Rich." The records also indicate that this pair is the only one made in this pattern. The design drawings were completed during the summer of 1884, and the labor charges alone for the making of the candelabra were $780.
