Lot Essay

There is a companion portrait to this Charles and Edwin Furber watercolor that depicts the boys' sisters, Mary Elizabeth and Martha Nelson, now in the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. It also was painted in 1835 and bears many of the stylistic hallmarks associated with Davis' work. For further information regarding Joseph H. Davis, please see Esther Sparks, American Folk Painters of Three Centuries, "Joseph H. Davis" (New York, 1980).
