INSCRIBED "ELIZA ANN NEWMAN, MRS. BROWN SEMINARY, 1828"

The floral enclosed inscription above a three-story brickwork dwelling with a young girl at an open window, beside a full-length figure of a woman with silk-painted details, flanked by a blossoming tree and a weeping willow, each with birds, the front lawn with ducks and rabbits, and figures of men at the elaborate wrought-iron-type gate and fence, the border a meandering floral vine (some fading and browning, minor losses to edges)--17 1/4 x 22 1/2in.

Lot Essay

A closely-related needlework picture was sold in these rooms on May 28, 1987, lot 109. It was inscribed "Maria S. Furrer's work wrot in the 12 year of her age in E. Brown's Wesleyan Seminary."
