Lot Essay

An immigrant from Hungary, Diederich worked in several materials, but is best known for his metalwork. His great interest in depicting animals is manifest in the present example of his work. The hand-wrought weathervane, which shows the silhouettes of two greyhounds, exemplifies one of his favorite themes.

This weathervane, which was hung on the wall of Diederich's studio, remained in its original location until recently.
