EARLY 19TH CENTURY, SIGNED P. DELLA VALLE

The circular top decorated with a central medallion depicting St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome surrounded by chamfered rectangular vignettes of the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountins, the -----, Constantine's Triumphal Arch, the tomb of Cecilia Metella, aand the Coliseum, divided by foliate scrolling athemion--39½in. (100.5cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

This top was made by the Della Valle brothers, who had a workshop in Leghorn which specialized in scagliola. A table top bearing the trade label of 'Peter Della Valle & Brothers/Manufacturers and Painters of Scagliola/Num. 1473 per Porta Cappuccini/Leghorn' was sold Christie's London, 24 April 1980, lot 135. Another later table with a top signed 'F. Della Valle', was exhibited at the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851 and is now at the Gilbert Collection at the Los Angeles County Museum (A. Gonzales-Palacios, The Art of Mosaics, rev. ed. 1982 no. 81, p. 180) and another table top with later base signed 'Dalla Valle' was sold Christie's New York, 6 March 1992, lot 173
