Sarah Hope Harvey (1774-1824) was married to the artist, John Trumbull, in London in 1800. In a letter dated Feb. 11, 1983, Helen A. Cooper, Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Yale University Art Gallery, states that Trumbull was very devoted to his wife and did a number of portraits of her. She dates this particular portrait to the early 1820s and is almost identical to the half-length portrait at Yale. A copy of this letter will accompany the lot.
