A note attached to the original backing reads Painted at Nahaut, Mass. the summer of 1883 by F.E. Church entirely from memory, by him given to Nathan Appleton, who placed it in the Boston **** exhibition in the **** of the Panama Canal Exhib. It was painted on a sheet of note paper.
