Lot Essay

Regarded as America's most talented female miniaturist, Sarah Goodridge was instructed in the technique by the painter Gilbert Stuart, whose only known miniature was painted as a teaching aid for her. Goodridge opened up her studio in Boston by 1820, where she remained her entire life, and was able to support her family through her work. (Dale T. Johnson, American Portrait Miniatures in the Manney Collection (New York, 1990), pp. 125-126).
